Major Gifts Manager manages and implements a philanthropic gift program to nurture and solicit relationships with corporate, institutional, and major donors. Develops a portfolio of existing and potential donors and a strategy to enhance and extend relationships to generate philanthropic revenue. Being a Major Gifts Manager organizes events and meetings with prospects to raise awareness of the organization's mission and highlight accomplishments and ongoing funding needs. Makes regular personal contact with key contributors to strengthen relations with the organization. Additionally, Major Gifts Manager oversees proposal preparation and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Major Gifts Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Major Gifts Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required. Organizational Overview
Save the Chimps operates the largest privately funded chimpanzee sanctuary in the
world. Located on nearly 150 acres in Fort Pierce, on the Treasure Coast of Florida, the
Sanctuary provides high quality lifetime medical and behavioral care and enrichment for
chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, entertainment, and the pet trade.
Save the Chimps was established in 1997 and is home to over 226 chimpanzees. The
work of the organization is accomplished by a nonprofit board of directors,
approximately 80 full-time staff, and a number of community volunteers.
Job Responsibilities
The Director of Major Gifts is responsible for the strategic direction and relationship
management of individual donors giving $1,000 or more annually. The Director of Major
Gifts manages a $1.3m revenue line and is essential to developing, expanding, and
stewarding major donor support for Save the Chimps.
