Major Gifts Manager manages and implements a philanthropic gift program to nurture and solicit relationships with corporate, institutional, and major donors. Develops a portfolio of existing and potential donors and a strategy to enhance and extend relationships to generate philanthropic revenue. Being a Major Gifts Manager organizes events and meetings with prospects to raise awareness of the organization's mission and highlight accomplishments and ongoing funding needs. Makes regular personal contact with key contributors to strengthen relations with the organization. Additionally, Major Gifts Manager oversees proposal preparation and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Major Gifts Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Major Gifts Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position Summary:

    The Center is launching new, exciting programs, including new commissions, capital improvements, a wider variety of artistic programming, and more. To support these endeavors, the Development Department is preparing a capital campaign. At this exciting moment in the Center’s history, the Center is seeking an energetic and outgoing individual for the position of Major Gifts Officer.

    The Major Gifts Officer is a new position within the Segerstrom Center for the Arts 20-person Development Department, contributing to an overall goal of $14M annually and an upcoming capital campaign. The position reports to the Associate Vice President of Development and is responsible for developing relationships with a core group of prospective donors with capacity for major gifts of $25K . This position is a frequent collaborator with the Development Department staff and other Center administrative departments. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. This is a full-time, exempt position.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 major gifts prospects and 25 planned giving prospects, inclusive of annual and campaign supporters, to effectively move individuals in the prospect pool through the various stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
    • Complete and document at least 15 personal visits, both on and off-campus, per month in the Tessitura database.
    • Participate in structured sessions with colleagues to coordinate prospect identification activities and moves management.
    • Collaborate with volunteer leadership to identify and engage new prospects and to help steward the Center’s major and mid-level donors.
    • Attend and support Center events and performances frequently as needed, such as pre-show dinners, cast parties, backstage tours, receptions, etc.
    • Collaborate with the Marketing Department to create pamphlets, proposals, and other collateral materials to promote giving opportunities.
    • Support the Center’s signature fundraising events by selling tables and sponsorships.
    • Other duties as assigned to best support the organization’s mission.

    Essential Qualifications & Personal Attributes

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Master’s degree is a plus.
    • Five or more years of fundraising experience, including at least three years in individual giving.
    • A driven, self-motivated, and creative relationship builder who will actively pursue new relationships and funding opportunities.
    • Demonstrated success in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors.
    • Comfort and familiarity discussing planned giving vehicles.
    • Strong computer and database management skills. Familiarity with the Tessitura database will be a plus.
    • Superior oral, written communication and presentation skills.
    • Exceptional negotiation skills that indicate an appreciation for each donor’s special interests and situations.
    • Genuine interest in the arts with the ability to understand and support the Center’s mission, coupled with a natural ability to articulate this mission to others.
    • Availability and willingness to work evening and weekends at Center performances and events.
    • Operating hours are 9:00am - 5:30pm with periodic evenings and weekends required.
    • CFRE certification or active involvement with AFP is a plus.

    Physical Demands*

    • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, and write by hand.
    • Often drive to scheduled events and meetings. Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
    • Ability to speak clearly with sufficient hearing to communicate effectively.
    • Occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds.
