Mammography Technologist operates specialized X-ray equipment and performs various mammography related procedures including screenings and diagnostic studies. Develops and evaluates the film for technical quality such as density contrast, definition, and distortion. Additionally, Mammography Technologist requires an associate degree or completion of a formal radiologic technology training program. Typically reports to a chief technologist or manager.     Reports to: Operations Manager

    Summary:

    Mammography Technologist performs medical mammograms and radiographic examinations in order to diagnose disease or trauma. The technologist is responsible for programming the machine for correct density, contrast, definition, magnification and distortion. The digital image will then be processed and presented to the mammography interpreting physician to diagnose problem areas. Ensures that images and records are properly completed with patient identification data and appropriate labeling. Use strong technical knowledge and skills to perform procedures accurately and in a timely manner, complete exam charges and image documentation and forward to radiologists.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff.
    • Reviews and evaluates developed x-rays or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
    • Explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan.
    • Keys command and data into computer to document and specify scan sequences, adjusts transmitters and receivers or photograph certain images.
    • Operates or oversees operation of radiologic equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes.
    • Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table/gantry.
    • Records, processes and maintains patient data and treatment records, and prepare reports.
    • Takes thorough and accurate patient medical histories.
    • Sets up examination rooms, ensuring that all necessary equipment is ready.
    • Monitors patients' conditions and reactions, reporting abnormal signs to physician.
    • Coordinates work with clerical personnel or other technologists.
    • Provides assistance in dressing or changing seriously ill, injured, or disabled patients.
    • Demonstrates new equipment, procedures, and techniques to staff, and provides technical assistance.
    • Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation. Prepares patients for tests or treatments. Maintains records of examinations performed, views taken and technical factors used.
    • Performs routing radiographic procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision.
    • Monitors equipment operation and report malfunctioning to supervisor.
    • Positions patient on examining mammography gantry/table and set up and adjust equipment to obtain optimum view of specific body area as requested by physician
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Assists with other modalities when needed as appropriate according to requirements.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
    • Maintain effective communication and working relationships with other employees and patients.

    Educations and Experience:

    • Completion of formal radiologic training from an AMA approved school
    • Evidence of one year of practice in the healthcare setting as a Mammography Technologist with the past two years.
    • Meets requirement for registry by American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.
    • ARRT Registered strongly preferred.
    • Certified by State of Texas as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist.
    • CPR certified.
    • 2 or more years clinical experience preferred.
    • Good communication and patient service skills are a must.
