The Managing Editor manages a group of writers, freelancers, and research assistants. Oversees the design and content of several publications. Being a Managing Editor is responsible for publication schedule planning and budget control. Reviews all assignments before publication to ensure material is accurate and compliance with internal and external policies. In addition, Managing Editor requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Managing Editor typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Working as a Managing Editor typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. The person we hire will become immersed in the community, will have flawless execution of grammar, spelling, style and punctuation and will be collaborative with the editorial content director, the photographer and the art director. Managing editors are tasked with:
· Planning and managing the content of an edition or editions.
· Building relationships and a source list that would be the envy of every journalist in metro Indianapolis.
· Be about and for the people of the community. Find compelling stories that play to our research-backed topics of interest and use those to enlighten, inform and/or entertain the audience. In doing so, make our readers healthier, wealthier and/or wiser.
· Covering breaking news ahead of the competition.
o Post it to the website and social media ASAP.
o Follow with a second-day story for the print edition.
· Reporting and writing of the cover story, as well as having three cover-story packages “in the can” at all times.
· Covering (or assigning coverage for) government meetings, economic development, school board meetings and business in general by the same parameters as aforementioned.
· Writing between four and six inside stories a week for print (not including the cover story). Those four to six stories would be in the 300-word range.
· Contributing one news item a day for the Current Morning Briefing.
· Working in concert with the newsroom director/copy chief to adhere to copy-flow and design protocols, the latter of which involves the art director.
· Working with at least one freelancer or intern to help plug coverage gaps or schedule conflicts.
· Working on other tasks as assigned, such as participating in content creation for special sections.
