  • THE JOB:

    Works closely with the Executive Editor on planning Florida Trend features, story outlines and freelance assignments. Plans and drives edit production schedules. Communicates with freelancers and staffers concerning story topics, concerns, and ideas. Enforces deadlines and edits all copy on a copy-editing level and a broader first-read level, including writing cutlines and headlines. Assists in ensuring articles are consistent with the tone and mission of the magazine.

    • Collaborate with fact-checker and writers to ensure accuracy of stories.
    • Serve as primary liaison with other Trend departments to traffic all needed material through layout and review, and in collaboration with the Executive Editor and Art Director, to final production version.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Be informed about Florida and micro- and macro-economics and stay abreast of business news developments across the state. Use a variety of sources — people, newspapers, periodicals and reports from governmental and non-governmental sources across the political spectrum. Meet with state leaders, policymakers and business executives when possible to stay informed on topics important to Florida and the magazine.
    • Use knowledge of Florida to generate story ideas. Prepare for and participate in story meetings at which ideas are refined and/or story lineups for specific issues are determined.
    • Collaborate with Executive Editor in maintaining a database of freelancers and fact-checkers for fill-in duty.
    • Collaborate with art department to make sure that appropriate photos are taken and layouts convey the story well. Help lead the editing process through final layout and fit and the “blueline” process. Send PDFs to writers, collect suggested changes, and make all changes agreed upon in collaboration with the Executive Editor and Art Director.
    • Continually evaluate the magazine’s look and content and suggest any changes that will improve it.
    • Participate collegially in staff activities. Stay in touch with other staff members independent of organized meetings.
    • Be mindful of business continuity issues to assure production schedules can be met even in the event of extraordinary circumstances.
    • Coordinate with the magazine’s digital and social media teams to ensure stories are delivered across Trend’s multiple platforms.
    • Consistently demonstrate a collaborative attitude to build positive working relationships with colleagues on all levels.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    • 4-year college degree
    • 5 years significant journalism experience, including line and copy editing.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

    • Strong writing skills and familiarity with long-form journalism and storytelling.
    • Familiarity with economics and business strongly preferred.
    • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign software; ability to learn and master software, systems and established editorial workflow as job requires.
    • Ability to set priorities, maintain focus and complete tasks on time. Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
    • Detail-oriented, self-directed and independent.
