Position Description

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability/Controlled Good or higher).

Serco supports multiple customers including government customers and shipyards in various stages of design  as well as in-service support of ships, submarines, crafts and other floating structures.

The Marine Engineer receives technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff to which the individual is assigned and applies basic knowledge of marine engineering and mechanical engineering to perform routine analyses and prepare basic engineering systems such as fluid systems, propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, HVAC systems, and electrical systems  in support of the design of ships, crafts, and other floating structures.

Serco supports multiple customers including government customers and shipyards in designing ships, crafts and other floating structures, and their systems.

You will be part of a member team working for a Ship Design Manager or Engineering Manager designing ships, or ship systems and working closely with the customer and other Serco teams.  You will support the development of engineering change specifications and respond to queries from the production floor that require an engineering assessment during the refits of ships and submarines under the guidance of a functional manager. You may be required to perform Logistics Support Analysis under the guidance of ILS Manager

You will apply basic mechanical and marine engineering knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards, and will use engineering tools and software to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas.

In this role, you will:

• Apply basic mechanical and marine engineering knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas:
• Provides engineering solution for repairing the defects identified during the survey for various types of pipes, pipe fittings, valves, pumps, etc
• Identifies correct non-destructive testing methods to be applied to identify defects in during survey or post repairs for above
• Provides engineering solutions to production issues related to piping systems and mechanical equipment
• Support engineering tasks pertaining to refit / installation of C4ISR equipment such as weapon launching systems, onboard sensors etc.
• Support commissioning of equipment during refit
• Support the testing and tuning of equipment post refit
• Ensure primary consideration is given to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in all activities undertaken within areas of responsibility
• Participates in working with clients to formulate requirements and specifications and then develop these into concept designs, system functional and detailed designs.
• Participates in developing drawings and providing oversight of drawing development. 
• Participates in marine engineering analysis and design for new ship and submarine systems designs, by performing Class Rule calculations and detail design of propulsion shafting and bearings, auxiliary/ fluid systems design, auxiliary equipment selection, component and pipe sizing, pressure drops and flow calculations, pump selection and material selection.
• Participates in design studies and developing reports on various areas in marine engineering discipline such as exhaust system back pressure calculations, EEDI calculations, etc.
• Participates in design of salient systems such as bilge and ballast system, fire-main system, compressed air system, seawater and freshwater cooling system, fuel oil system, prewetting system etc.
• Participates in developing Technical Product specifications for various system components, standalone systems and mechanical equipment for procurement
• Reviews and determines the Vendor supplied Information for suitability of purpose.
• Participates in feasibility studies and developing whitepapers for procuring standalone systems
• Participates in developing machinery arrangements, analyzing requirements for area and volume,  and maintenance envelopes, illustrating functional allocation of spaces considering location and adjacency constraints.
• Participates in option and trade off studies including access to various components for the operation and maintainers.
• Participates in developing equipment shipping and unshipping routes.
• Participates in developing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Inputs/ Outputs signal list, functionalities, and logic.
• Participates in performing piping system calculations using software such as PIPENET, PIPEFLOW or PIPE-FLO. Expertise in fluid flow analysis using CFD tool would be an asset.
• Participates in analysis and selection of resilient mounts for various equipment in the machinery spaces.
• Assists with the review of design proposals and specifications as well as developing the build specifications for mechanical systems and propulsion system.
• Participates in performing risk analysis of functional design and impact of changes to major systems.
• Participates in functional review of detailed design 3D models and final acceptance
• Participate in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.
• Assists in preparing documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.
• Assists in development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provides inputs to technical reports and presentations.
• Assist with preparation and presentation of formal briefings and staff seminars.
• Complies with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security procedures, in the performance of duties.

Qualifications

To successful in this role, you will have: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering or related Engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, or equivalent in training and experience with up to four (4) years relative work experience is required.

• Must be eligible to obtain a Reliability Level Clearance prior to employment. (Canadian Citizen / Permanent Resident Status is required.)

• Must be able to apply basic mechanical and marine engineering knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas
• Travel up to 10% may be required

Additional desired experience and skills:

• Possessing a Professional Engineer’s designation is considered an asset.
• General knowledge about the principles of operation of a submarine, its design/ layout, materials used, and types of systems in it is considered an asset
• Knowledge of Types of defects in mechanical systems normally seen on marine vessels
• Knowledge behavior of materials used in marine systems under load, flow and environmental conditions
• Prior COOP term, internship or experience in Marine industry, Oil and Gas, Department of National Defence, Department of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (Canadian Coastguard), heavy engineering industry/ field jobs would be considered an asset
• Experience with ship checks, ship visits and surveys and shipyard Design Reviews would be considered an asset.

In compliance with local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $83,300 CAD to $85,000 CAD however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
