Reporting to Dr. Dennis Durbin, President of the AWRI, the CSO serves as a member of the Research Institute senior leadership team, with responsibility for oversight of research Centers of Emphasis, including faculty and trainee recruitment, development, and retention, associated space management, as well as operational oversight of key research core resources in support of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s strategic priorities to further its mission as an academic pediatric health care leader and innovator.
The next CSO will have demonstrated advanced leadership skills in an academic research setting (beyond running their own research lab), high level of professionalism and collaborative communications skills. The successful candidate will have experience recruiting, mentoring and developing basic science/ translational research faculty and trainees of all levels.
Nationwide Children’s Hospital announced in June 2021 its most ambitious strategic plan with a five- year $3.3 billion commitment to transform health outcomes for all children, through world-class care and cutting-edge research. With additional state-of-the art research space coming online in 2023, the AWRI is also seeking to recruit at least 50 research faculty over 5 years, and the next CSO will have a key role in overseeing these recruitments and shaping the anticipated aggressive growth of the AWRI.
Works with Research Institute Center Directors overseeing efforts to recruit and retain research- intensive faculty with a particular focus on basic science and translational (i.e., wet bench) research in alignment with The Research Institute’s strategic plan;
Ensure faculty recruits catalyze development of collaborative interactions with The Ohio State University College of Medicine and other main campus colleges, as well as other AWRI Centers of Emphasis.
In collaboration with the Director of Research Operations, the CSO is responsible for initial allocation, as well as ongoing management of research space according to AWRI’s space policy.
Works collaboratively with the Center for Faculty Development to ensure a robust program of faculty academic development resources. Participates in relevant research faculty development programming.
Supports the Research Institute’s Office of Trainee Affairs and its faculty director in the recruitment and development of doctoral students and postdoctoral research fellows across a wide range of scientific disciplines. Works collaboratively with residency and fellowship program leadership to support subspecialty fellow and resident research training.
Oversees Institutional Research Cores;
Serves as Chair of the Research Core Advisory Committee, ensuring that an optimal portfolio of research cores is appropriately resourced and utilized.
Oversees the Office of Research Regulatory Affairs.
Serves as Research Integrity Officer (RIO) for research misconduct investigations.
