    Job Summary
    The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is seeking a Communications and Marketing Specialist to join a dynamic and innovative statewide team working to improve the health and lives of Alabamians. The Communications and Marketing Specialist will provide expertise for development, implementation, and evaluation of social media and marketing strategies content for Alabama Extension’s Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources programmatic teams and other ACES communications projects and initiatives, and content for Alabama Extension marketing and media efforts.

    This position will be housed and supervised within Alabama Extension’s Communications, Strategic Marketing, and Client Relations department and will work under the guidance of the ANFR leadership team made up of subject matter specialists and program leadership. Successful candidates will have a positive attitude and an interest in writing about AFNR-related topics.

    Essential Functions
    • Manage social media for agriculture, forestry, natural resources, and wildlife program teams including coordination of campaigns, creation of content, oversight of schedules, and reporting key performance indicators.
    • Develops marketing and communication plans to promote the vision, mission, goals and achievements of the nine AFNR program areas.
    • Researches, designs and composes content for dissemination through a variety of mediums, such as internal or external publications, brochures, posters, newsletters, websites, presentations, development/fundraising materials, press packages, and mass media.
    • Coordinates the production of materials to include content/style editing, designing, printing, photography, videos, and/or copywriting.
    • Coordinates marketing and communication calendars, production schedules and deadlines, including coordination of work carried out by external vendors.
    • Assist with the development and production of podcasts and videos.
    • Support the broader Extension communications and marketing team through participating in staff meetings and teamwide efforts, and completing assignments to support other ACES programs.
    • Assist in the creation, population, and maintenance of educational content and web pages on the Alabama Extension website.
    • Some in-state travel to county-based program efforts for developing news releases and success stories will be required.
    • Develop news releases, success stories, promotional materials, reports, and other materials to support the efforts of AFNR teams and maintenance of digital assets.
    • Collaborate with a Media Production Specialist/Graphic Designer to incorporate visually engaging graphics, photography, and videography into online content, promotional materials, and stakeholder reports.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field

    Level I- Bachelor’s degree

    Level II- Bachelor’s degree plus 2 year of experience in marketing and communications services to include print journalism

    Level III- Bachelor’s degree plus 4 year of experience in marketing and communications services to include print journalism

    Substitutions allowed for Experience:
    Graduate degrees accepted in lieu of experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

    Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

    Minimum Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of social media, marketing, and design; public relations campaigns.
    • Excellent writing skills as well as proficiency in social media platforms and social media management software is vital.
    • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is needed, especially Photoshop. Understanding of current and evolving media technologies.
    • The selected individual must possess the ability to work effectively and in a positive manner while providing excellent customer service, have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
    • The successful candidate must have the ability to maintain diplomacy at all times, possess a high level of professionalism, be customer service driven and flexible in attitude.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and manage multiple priorities.
    • The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States by the start date and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
    • Ability to drive department vehicles and rental vehicles (alone or with other department staff members) to perform job responsibilities as occasional travel is required.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends if necessary in order to meet deadlines.

    • Candidates with a passion for agriculture, food safety, wildlife and natural resources and experience writing and communicating about these topics for a lay audience are encouraged to apply.
