Requires a bachelor's degree. Additionally, Materials Director typically reports to a director. The Materials Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking an Assistant Director for Administration to provide high-level management support to the leadership team including strategic leadership and planning. The position will be responsible for oversight and activities related to procurement and inventory, provide management support to the MRL sponsored project portfolio, provide business continuity for times when the Associate Director for Administration is unavailable, and represent MRL at both internal and external meetings and events.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Serve as a member of MRL’s executive leadership team, including participating in the department’s strategic planning process and leading implementation efforts to achieve unit strategy and goals.
    • Serve as a liaison between MRL leadership and assigned MRL major centers, including oversight of center-hired staff, budgeting, and financial assessments; coordination of sponsor reporting; and resource management to ensure program success.
    • Assist the Associate Director for Administration by triaging incoming grant proposal development and assisting faculty with proposal development. Work with other campus units to facilitate the application/submission process.
    • Oversee all aspects of MRL procurement activities, including the MRL storeroom and shipping/receiving operations. Manage department’s property accounting functions and administer cyclical inventory audits.
    • Provide interpretation of agency and university guidelines and policy, as they apply to business and sponsored project activities.
    • Supervise and train assigned professional staff in University regulation and procedures, including assigning tasks and conducting performance reviews.
    • Prepare special reports for departmental management, as requested.
    • Attend meetings on behalf of the unit, as directed.
    • Assume additional responsibilities to promote the unit’s mission as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or a field related to the position.
    • Three years of professional business, financial, and or managerial work experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position (may be substituted
    for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience).
    • Five years of related administrative work experience with at least two years of supervisory
    experience.
    • Demonstrated experience with University of Illinois accounting practices and fiscal
    oversight.
    • Demonstrated experience with physical property controls.
    • Illinois Certified Research Administrator (Illini CRA).
    • Illinois Certified Business Administrator (CBA).

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Demonstrated willingness to take on leadership roles.
    • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills are required.
    • Familiarity with the administrative policies and procedures of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is preferred

    SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    This is a 100% full-time Business/Administrative Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Salary is commensurate with experience.
