Materials Director directs operations and planning to optimize the flow of raw materials, supplies, and equipment from initial procurement to the final disposition and fulfill material requirements for volume, cost, and scheduling business operations. Estimates material requirements using data and analysis of orders, inventory levels, economic trends, and supplier sources to develop long-range plans to ensure the required flow of materials. Being a Materials Director coordinates procurement, warehouse, and distribution operations to improve operational efficiencies and workflows crucial to the flow of materials. Requires a bachelor's degree. Additionally, Materials Director typically reports to a director. The Materials Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Responsibilities: Planning, timely, cost-effective procurement, inventory control, planning and quality control of production materials. Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and material control systems to reduce costs, streamline procedures, and implement solutions. Ensure the availability of materials in the supply chain, as scheduled, and the maintenance of inventory at minimum acceptable levels. Coordinate with finance/accounting on matters involving inventory-carrying costs. Review and plan requirements for acceptable inventory. May work with customers in auditing customer inventory levels and with internal and external vendors to comply with inventory policies. Process purchase requisitions, purchase change orders and requests for quotes to suppliers. Responsible for procurement business system data input and integrity. Manage new product material flow for projects. Manage the entire materials process from concept to final release for moderate to very complex projects. Determine engineering needs, select the most appropriate suppliers, and work with suppliers to ensure requirements are met. Focus includes risk assessment for demands from internal and external customers, with the intent to minimize inventory exposure. May negotiate contracts; responsible for all components being available on time and ready to use. Conduct make or buy analysis prior to making outsourcing decisions.
