    S&ME is seeking a highly motivated Construction Materials Staff Engineer to join our team in Wilmington, NC. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain more hands on experience and advance their engineering and project management skills working with seasoned professionals on construction materials testing projects.


    What You Will Do:

    Construction Materials Staff Engineers at S&ME will gain valuable field testing and observation experience on a wide variety of projects that makes you that much more effective in solving construction-related challenges.. You will have the opportunity to work and learn under licensed engineers and senior staff to help develop your knowledge, experience and skills to progress in your career.


    Responsibilities can include:

    • Review of civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation for field site visits and observations
    • Documenting field activities, observations, and construction materials testing results on projects
    • Daily use of MetafieldĀ®, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems
    • Testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout on construction projects for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications
    • Communication of field and laboratory observations and testing results with Construction Services and Geotechnical Project Management staff, general contractors, and clients
    • Assisting Project Management staff with review of field data, disposition of identified construction discrepancies, and preparation of formal reports
    • Preparation of field and laboratory cost estimates and proposals in accordance with projects plans and specifications, International Building Code (IBC) requirements, and client-provided requests for proposals

    Who You Are:

    • You have or will have a Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Construction related field, or appropriate technical field, within 6 months
    • You have at least 2 years of experience with field and/or laboratory geotechnical/construction materials testing
    • You have any of the following certifications with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) certification:
      • Field Testing Grade I
      • Strength Testing Technician
      • Laboratory Technician
    • You have effective communication and writing skills using the English language
    • You are wiling to obtain International Code Council (ICC), and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) certifications in the fields of aggregate, asphalt, soil, reinforced concrete, and masonry

    Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

    You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

    • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
    • Walking over rough and uneven terrain
    • Standing up to 8 hours a day, up to 12 hours on occasion
    • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
    • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
    • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
    • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
