FIREFIGHTER (HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OPERATIONS)

  • Duties

    Survey the incident to identify materials involved, determine whether hazardous materials have been released, evaluate surrounding conditions and predicting the likely behavior of a material and/or container.

    Perform crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great.

    Perform structural firefighting duties at facilities which may be engaged in the production, storage and testing of fuels, explosives, gases or other chemicals and materials.

    Perform rescue of personnel and a variety of first air measures to alleviate further injury and prepare personnel for transport to a medical facility. Use direct pressure and/or tourniquets to stop bleeding, checks windpipe for obstructions, perform CPR and/or provide other appropriate assistance.

    Maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities; perform functional test, inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with the assigned facilities.

    • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment and participation in random drug testing
    • Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical before entrance on duty, unless otherwise exempt
    • Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program
    • Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management
    • Disclosure of Political Appointments is required
    • The employee is required to work a 72 hour week on a 24 hour on/24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall
    • Direct Deposit: All federal employees are required to have direct deposit.
    • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program
    • 120-Day Register: This announcement may result in a 120-day register that may be used to fill like vacancies for 120 days after the closing date. Applicants may be referred for consideration as vacancies occur.
    • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required
    • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth
    • May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC)
    • Mission essential personnel report for duty at normal times when the base is closed or delayed reporting, and remain on duty during phased or early release.

    Qualifications

    In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0081.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties Firefighter. Specialized experience is experience which may have been gained while performing firefighter duties engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Operations and assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards and reacting to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials as a first responder to protect persons, property, or the environment.

    In additional to the qualification requirements above, applicant must possess the following valid nationally recognized firefighter certifications before the entrance on duty date:
    • Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II)
    • HAZMAT Awareness
    • HAZMAT Operations
    • HAZMAT Technician

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

    1. Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, and identification.

    2. Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fuel alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures.

    3. Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy; and of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems.

    4. Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.

    5. Skill in operating communications equipment.

    6. Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; to lift and carry heavy loads; and to apply emergency first aid techniques.

    PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
