Mechanic Technician maintains and services a building or plant's mechanical equipment, control systems, power distribution systems, and HVAC systems. Performs preventative maintenance and routine repairs to systems and equipment. Being a Mechanic Technician conducts periodic safety and maintenance inspections to evaluate equipment for replacement and identify wear and damage. Uses technical diagrams, blueprints, and schematics to install, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair equipment, engines, and compressors. Additionally, Mechanic Technician orders parts needed for replacement and coordinates with service providers to complete maintenance tasks. Uses a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or work order system to track and document activities. Follows established safety procedures and regulations for hazardous materials handling. May have completed a trade apprenticeship or technical training. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Mechanic Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. The Maintenance Planner is responsible for subcontracted projects, reoccurring / non-reoccurring preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) activities. The position is located at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA- JPL). The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

    Job Title: Generator Mechanic / Technician (JPL)

    Summary:

    The project is approximately 3 million SF with more than 200 buildings on campus. Generator Mechanic / Technician must possess the necessary skills and knowledge for performing preventive maintenance, repairs and operations of all generators and associated emergency power systems. Ensure quality workmanship and high work standards conforming at all times to the published electrical codes. Maintain the quality and quantity of his / her work up to acceptable Company standards and in accordance with established policies.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Perform routine maintenance or repairs to power generation systems, including generators and ATSs.
    • Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of generator systems, including but not limited to performing engine oil and coolant services, servicing and priming fuel system.
    • Troubleshoot & repair diesel and gaseous engines.
    • Perform field inspections of generators. Determine generator condition by conducting. Inspections & diagnostic tests.
    • Perform and diagnose or troubleshoot generator, ATS and switch gear problems with systems failures down to the mechanical / electrical component level.
    • Monitor periodically to ensure proper functioning and performance.
    • Prepare and submit compliance, operational, and safety forms or reports.
    • Load test batteries, check and repair charging systems.
    • Perform load bank monthly test, and quarterly ATS building load transfers.
    • Perform engine and ATS annual Preventive Maintenance (PM) and according to PM Job Task List.
    • Complete AQMD tune-ups and according to PM job Task List.
    • Maintain Generator records with an accurate documentation of service and repairs, such as such as Maximo Work Orders and generator logs.
    • Repair and troubleshoot engines such as CAT, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and Kohler.
    • Service and troubleshoot generators, ATSs, UPSs batteries and transformers.
    • Troubleshoot and maintain control circuitry, variable frequency drives and all other special electrical systems.
    • Wire outlets, relocate fixtures, lighting and power panels, and install raceways when applicable and required.
    • Use a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment including oscilloscopes, ammeters, and test lamps.
    • Responsible for the completion of all PM and record keeping assigned to his/her areas of responsibility.
    • Make recommendations to his/her supervisor as necessary on the performance of all equipment.
    • Respond to electrical and equipment emergencies at any time.
    • Ensure that safe working conditions are being maintained in all areas under his/her control.
    • Work with the MRO group to provide vendor quotes, and information for ordering material.

    Qualifications / Requirements:

    • 5 years of commercial/industrial generator experience
    • Requires a formal apprenticeship program or traceable OEM training certificates.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of generators, diesel and gaseous engines, controls, and systems, transfer switches and switch gear.
    • Must be able to troubleshoot & repair AC and DC controls and equipment such as engine controllers, Automatic Voltage Regulators, battery chargers, block heaters, automatic transfer switches and switchgear.
    • Must have advanced understanding of various generator components and their functions, including current transformers, relays, engine control modules, exhaust control technologies, voltage regulation.
    • Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose, test, and repair all various types and manufacturers of automatic transfer switches, paralleling systems, distribution, and utility gear.
    • Must demonstrate current knowledge of maintenance practices, and concepts.
    • Must have knowledge of applicable federal, state and local safety codes and be able to read, interpret and explain schematics and drawings.
    • Must have the ability to resolve complex issues that require analysis, evaluation and interpretation.
    • Must have knowledge of computer operations and application pertinent to their field (CMMS, Microsoft applications and email).
    • Must be able to move/lift heavy objects, climb vertical ladders and work at various heights.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and good customer service skills.
    • Ability to read and write in the English Language.
    • Valid CA driver's license.
