Mechanical Designer designs and creates layouts and documentation for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and other mechanical building systems that meet project and technical specifications. Uses computer-aided design (CAD) and other specialized software tools to generate detailed layout plans, schematics, and drawings for mechanical systems. Being a Mechanical Designer maintains accurate and complete change and version control on all design files, documents, and drawings. Incorporates best practices to address design space constraints and ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and building codes. Additionally, Mechanical Designer collaborates with engineers and other project members. May conduct or participate in site visits to inspect installations or troubleshoot problems. May require an associate degree in mechanical design, drafting or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Mechanical Designer works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.   • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Participate with cross-functioning teams to ensure projects meet schedule and cost.
    • Responsible for managing the mechanical product design from concept through release for production.
    • Completes material selection, functional simulations, thermal analysis, mold flow analysis, finite element analysis, worst case tolerance analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, production drawings and documentation, verification and validation test plans and testing.
    • Keeps abreast of and advises management on new ideas which may be utilized to maintain and expand the Company’s competitive position.
    • Analyzes and interprets test data for new and/or modified products or components.
    • Works with other plant disciplines to ensure effective product development and launch.
    • Manages and controls Bills of Materials during the design phase.
    • Coordinates design activities with other disciplines in the areas of design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
    • Resolves problems using established problem-solving tools and employee solutions that involve new techniques, technologies and concepts.
    • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations and/or interdepartmental relations.
    • Ensures drawings and specifications are correct and up to date; checks all drawings and submits to Engineering Manager for approval for release for production.
    • International travel may be required.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    BSME required with a minimum of 5 years experience in new product development.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Proven abilities in:

    • Designing aesthetically pleasing products
    • Plastic part designs including snaps, over-moldings, pressure fits, sealing features, UV exposure and mechanical vibration and shock requirements.
    • Plastic enclosure designs for electronic based products including thermal and electromagnetic shielding requirements.
    • Material selection and tooling design understanding for components.
    • Plating processes for plastics and metals
    • Design, analysis and testing capabilities
    • Understand and maintain principles of lean manufacturing
    • Proficient in Pro-E and Mechanical CAD packages, 2D and 3D and AUTO-CAD 2000i
    • Proficient in English language
    • Experience designing products for marine and/or automotive environments

    • Excellent analytical and documentation skills

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk, use hands and fingers, talk and hear.  The employee will occasionally be required to bend and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. 

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    This position is in an office setting with standard office lighting, equipment and a quiet noise level.
