Mechanical Designer designs and creates layouts and documentation for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and other mechanical building systems that meet project and technical specifications. Uses computer-aided design (CAD) and other specialized software tools to generate detailed layout plans, schematics, and drawings for mechanical systems. Being a Mechanical Designer maintains accurate and complete change and version control on all design files, documents, and drawings. Incorporates best practices to address design space constraints and ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and building codes. Additionally, Mechanical Designer collaborates with engineers and other project members. May conduct or participate in site visits to inspect installations or troubleshoot problems. May require an associate degree in mechanical design, drafting or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Mechanical Designer works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     Description

    1.0 INTRODUCTION

    1.1 The purpose of this procedure is to define the authorities, responsibilities, principle duties, reporting relationships, and measures of performance for the Designer for Raven Mechanical.

    1.2 The Designer must communicate in all directions between company needs; the design criteria for the assigned projects, pre-fabrication expectations, field & operational criteria, and architectural/engineering attributes of the project.

    2.0 FUNCTIONAL ROLE

    2.1 Support the initiation of a design or associated engineering per project by providing high quality drawings.

    2.2 Assist and coordinates with Customer, Fabrication Dept, Project Manager and Estimator to deliver drawing packages and specifications to internal departments and subcontractors.

    2.3 Incorporate alterations or changes into drawings during construction or design phases.

    Qualifications


    3.0 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    3.1 Education: Minimum High school graduate. Preferred: Associates or Bachelors Degree in Civil, Architecture, or Mechanical Engineering.

    3.2 Experience: Prefers 2 years drafting experience preparing architectural 3-D renderings and construction, structural engineering drawings and documents for commercial construction projects.

    3.3 Licenses/Certifications Minimum Valid state Texas driving license. Project Management Certification a plus. Required to have Journeyman Plumbing License that is issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.

    3.4 Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Analytical and mathematical skills as related to project design practices and procedures. Ability to provide accurate drawings and data in a timely manner. The ability to communicate with managers and staff within the company in English. Additional items listed below:
    a. Drafting skills using AutoCAD systems
    b. Demonstrated knowledge in the fundamentals of effective knowledge and use of the terminology, tools and materials necessary to prepare and deliver design packages for institutional and commercial construction proposals and projects.
    c. Ability to create, update, and manage drawings in AutoCAD
    d. Word processor and spread sheet skills (e.g. MS Word and Excel)
    e. Ability to decipher architectural and engineering drawings and specifications
    f. Ability to interpret and produce 2-D and 3-D drawings and CAD renderings from elevations and plans
    g. Superior organization skills.
    h. Superior knowledge of construction processes and equipment.
    i. Demonstrated ability to effectively draw or design multiple projects in an efficient manner.
    j. Sound knowledge of all laws and regulations related to the safe operation of a construction site.
    k. Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with the client or clients representative.
    l. Ability to read, analyze, interpret blueprints, specification data, submittals, procedure manuals, contracts, and industry codes.
    m. Excellent knowledge of the Companys industry and trends impacting the companys business.
    n. Familiarity with all industry terminology, codes and standards.

    Physical High energy level to manage multiple bids and active jobs. Normal physical mobility to allow for job site inspections at customer sites. Sight, touch, and hearing senses must support the inspection requirements. Significant time at desk working with engineering documents, blueprints, job paperwork and computer systems and applications. The body must perform the normal motions necessary for reaching, writing, typing, and use of the telephone.

    Mental Must have the ability to read and interpret project drawings, understand and visualize complex roofing and construction projects and perform accurate take-offs for estimating.

    Language Required Superior ability to read, write, and speak English.

    Mathematics Ability to perform normal mathematical functions on a calculator or computer.

    Reasoning Ability Ability to coordinate multiple complex schedules of tasks on several bids or jobs at different levels of completion--keeping multiple demands clear, identifying critical priorities and communicating these details and needs concisely and accurately.

    Must be computer literate with specific competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, and estimating software (Experience with Logistics/QuickPen a plus).

    Working Conditions - Approximately 75% of time is spent in an office environment primarily in a climate controlled office environment. Normal working hours will be Monday thru Friday from 7:00am until 4:00pm, however this is a vital position and there will be times when additional time or alternate scheduled may apply for this position. Workdays often exceed the 8 hour norm due to job requirements, customer document requirements or customer meetings. Frequent visits to various work sites, client offices or job locations as necessary to gather data for design or drawings.

    4.0 REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    4.1 The Designer reports to the CAD & Fabrication Coordinator.

    4.2 Provides technical and project scope support to the Fabrication Dept, Project Manager, Superintendent, Foremen and others for assigned jobs.


    5.0 AUTHORITY

    The Designer is given the necessary authority to administer the following basic functions of this position:

    5.1 The Designer has full operating authority to fulfill the responsibilities of the position as described in Section 6.0 of this Operating Procedure. He/she retains responsibility and accountability for the success of the operations assigned to him/her.

    6.0 DUTIES & TASKS

    The principal duties and tasks of the Designer are as follows:

    6.1 Prepare and review plans, construction bid documents, and specifications for assigned construction projects and for renovation / alteration projects.

    6.2 Coordinate development of the projects design with clients/ owners.

    6.3 Monitor construction progress with periodic on-site inspections and reviews.

    6.4 May provide consulting services to fellow employees or other architect(s) within area(s) of architectural specialty.

    6.5 Under the supervision of the CAD & Fabrication Coordinator, prepare site plans, sections, elevations, mechanical details, 3-D isometrics, etc. for projects in accordance with AIA construction drawing standards and practices.

    6.6 As directed, using the AutoCAD systems, create new drawings from concepts and generate/modify project drawings for each stage of the construction process including fabrication drawings.

    6.7 Create 2-D and 3-D renderings and other visuals for presentations to prospective clients and new business proposals.

    6.8 Work closely with the CAD & Fabrication Coordinator to incorporate changes to drawings and maintain a system/procedure for drawing control.

    6.9 Work with production and management staff creating, designing, and editing final designs for the assigned projects.

    6.10 Review pending projects with staff, identifying design options, resources required, scope and preliminary work plans so that the information can be scheduled and coordinated with Fabrication Department.

    6.11 Attend and participate in weekly review meetings upon request to identify work load, update schedules, and communicate status updates to management and other staff of progress with current designs.

    6.12 The Designer is responsible for identifying missing relevant information and submission of forms back to its source of origination for further investigation before design process can be completed.

    6.13 Performs Special Projects tasks and duties from time to time in which this position may perform all of or a part of the project scope.

    6.14 Assures the accurate and timely completion of all drawings and designs with the highest standards of quality.

    6.15 Communicate with clients and other Raven Mechanical staff cheerfully and knowledgeably.

    6.16 All other duties and tasks requested and/or assigned by the CAD & Fabrication Coordinator.

    7.0 STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

    7.1 Successfully uses the AutoCAD systems, create new drawings from concepts and generate/modify project drawings for each stage of the construction process including fabrication drawings.

    7.2 Assures the accurate and timely completion of all drawings and designs with the highest standards of quality.

    7.3 Reviews pending projects with staff, identifying design options, resources required, scope and preliminary work plans so that the information can be scheduled and coordinated with Fabrication Department.

    7.4 Effective working relationships are maintained with other company personnel.

    7.5 Designer was successful identifying missing relevant information and submission of forms back to its source of origination for further investigation before design process can be completed.

    7.6 Communications with the Customer are effective and appropriate.

    7.7 Demonstrates good judgment in suitably reporting major matters or problems to the CAD & Fabrication Coordinator for job or design related items.

    7.8 Has ensured the confidentiality of company information throughout his/her duties and interactions.

    7.9 Displays a positive attitude and maintains a cooperative working relationship with the departments and all other staff.

    7.10 Is proficient and effective in communicating through both oral and written documentation the details of the design job and how the design was developed.

    7.11 Consistently displays the ability to recognize and deal with priorities.
