Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is seeking a part-time/casual Mechanical Engineering Associate to support the Structural Mechanics & Concepts Team at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.

Job Description:

Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) is seeking a part-time/casual Mechanical Engineering Associate to support the Structural Mechanics & Concepts Team at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. The successful candidate will contribute to the research and advancement of high temperature materials studies. The qualified candidate will be currently enrolled in an Engineering discipline program with a focus on Materials Research and demonstrated experience using laboratory equipment such as a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT). Software development such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), and an understanding of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard mechanical test methods.

Responsibilities:

• Support the development, fabrication, design, analysis and testing of refractory composite hot structures.
• Support the development of refractory composite databases via planning, testing and data analysis.
• Conduct tensile strength studies on refractory composites using ASTM standard mechanical test methods at elevated temperatures and document results.
• Operate laboratory equipment under the direction of material fabrication shop specialists.
• Develop software using MATLAB and/or Python to perform analysis capabilities.
• Use SOLIDWORKS software to develop computer-aided engineering and 3D CAD design for data analysis, collaboration, and data management of high temperature materials studies.

Requirements:

• Enrolled in Mechanical Engineering or other Engineering discipline.
• Demonstrated experience using structures and materials laboratory equipment that may include a Scanning Electron Microscope and X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT).
• Familiarization with the American Society for Testing and Materials standard test methods.
• Certified experience using SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, Ansys or similar modeling software.
• Motivated self-starter with strong organizational skills and works well in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience using MATLAB and/or Python for image processing and analysis software.
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Technical writing and documentation of project milestones and engineering processes.

Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident due to facility requirements.
