The Tennessee Education Association (TEA) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Communications and Media Relations Coordinator. The candidate who fills this position will be responsible for serving as the managing editor of TEA publications, drafting content for publication through various communications platforms, and serving as lead for internal and external messaging through the written, oral, visual, print and digital modes. Responsibilities will also include training staff and leadership on message discipline, supporting affiliates with media requests, graphic design work, serving as lead on communications campaigns, and serving as TEA’s media relations lead.
The successful candidate must be dynamic and innovative with a drive to create and implement a robust communications and media relations strategy. The successful candidate must possess sufficient physical and emotional stamina to spend long hours helping to provide necessary messaging and communications on behalf of TEA.
While the coordinator will reside in or near the Nashville area, he or she must be able to travel to train and support staff and local affiliates across the state with communications and media strategy. The coordinator must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess:
· A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing communications or related field; advanced degree preferred
· At least three years of professional experience leading strategic communications
· Excellent English language skills: verbal, written and editing skills
· Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective communication strategies and initiatives
· Ability to coordinate, plan and execute simultaneous projects
· Extensive computer skills:
· Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher
· Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud products, including photoshop, Acrobat, Acrobat Distiller, Illustrator and InDesign
· Proficiency in social media platforms and content management systems
· A working knowledge of how to use both traditional and digital media to educate targeted audiences and drive action
· Demonstrated understanding of how initiatives in media relations, advertising, digital engagement, government relations, direct marketing/engagement and development fit together in a successful communication strategy
· Experience and ability to capture and analyze appropriate data/metrics, insights, and best practices, and utilize data to promote organizational goals and positions
· Appropriate balance between quick, intuitive decisiveness and slower, more thorough problem-solving
· Strong leadership skills and personal characteristics with the ability to prioritize work, complete tasks in a timely manner, work independently and think creatively
· Understanding of member advocacy and collective action

Other Desired Qualifications
· Experience with paid advertising campaigns including work with ad agencies on creative development and media placement of TV, radio and newspaper ads
· Experience in a union environment, government agency, public sector organization or non-profit organization
· Experience in and/or knowledge of the political process and political strategy planning
· Experience in working in a progressive, member-driven environment
· Experience in developing and conducting communications/media/public relations training
