Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical records. Being a Medical Assistant prepares treatment rooms for the examination of patients. May draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Additionally, Medical Assistant may perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RCA) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Medical Assistant works under moderate supervision. This role participates in marketing activities; responds to product inquiries; inputs into the computer and documents inventory numbers of equipment sold or rented; tracks items in need of preventive maintenance, conducts preventive maintenance or contacts Biomed; warehouses inventory and inputs to Purchasing staff on items needed; delivers items; receives requests on deliveries; provides instruction for operation of Durable Medical Equipment items; obtains paperwork to ensure maximum reimbursement potential; identifies other patient needs; cleans all returned rental equipment; services equipment; remains knowledgeable of products available for rent or sale; utilizes appropriate resources to develop product knowledge and communicates with DME Purchasing staff regarding product shortages and other product suggestions. Patients cared for include infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric.
