Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical records. Being a Medical Assistant prepares treatment rooms for the examination of patients. May draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Additionally, Medical Assistant may perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RCA) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Medical Assistant works under moderate supervision. The Medical Assistant will assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction.
Responsibilities
Accompany patients to exam / procedure room.
o Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
o Collect patient information / history, taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.
o Relay instructions to patients / families.
o Schedule appointments.
o Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
o Clean exam / procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
o Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam / procedure rooms.
o Perform phlebotomy, EKG's, and level one labs.
o Assist physicians with procedures.
Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
Medical Assistant :
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
Medical Assistant, Senior :
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN / RN / EMT)
OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA
OR at least 1 year of patient care experience required.
Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category specific tasks.
Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances :
All clearances must be dated within 90 days of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Medical Assistant
Act 33 with renewal
Act 34 with renewal
Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
