Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical records. Being a Medical Assistant prepares treatment rooms for the examination of patients. May draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Additionally, Medical Assistant may perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RCA) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Medical Assistant works under moderate supervision. Purpose :
Assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction.
Responsibilities :
Check schedules and organize patient flow. Accompany patients to exam / procedure rooms. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc.
Collect patient information / history; take vitals, perform screenings per provider guidelines. Relay instructions to patients / families.
Clean according to scheduled maintenance program and keep appropriate records. Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam / procedure rooms.
Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs. Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure. Assist physicians with procedures.
Document patient information in the medical record.
Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics. Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
