Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical records. Being a Medical Assistant prepares treatment rooms for the examination of patients. May draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Additionally, Medical Assistant may perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RCA) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Medical Assistant works under moderate supervision.     Certified Medical Assistant

    Cookeville , Tennessee, United States Full-time

    Position Summary

    Assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient management. Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients and maintain medical records. Reports directly to Nursing Coordinator. Must perform other diverse duties as requested or required.

    Primary Duties

    CMAs must possess the ability and knowledge to perform medical assistant care and ensure the safety, comfort, and protection of patients. They must display competence in taking vital signs as well as performing skin tests, injections, and withdrawal of human blood from veins, and placement of intravenous (IV) lines. They must be knowledgeable of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures. CMAs must be aware of proper use of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Skill in maintaining electronic medical records and recording test results is essential. CMAs shall assist with nursing/nursing calls and precerts and referrals during down time as well as monitoring inventory of clinical supplies for ordering purposes. It is important to always present a professional image, utilize time management skills effectively, and answer telephones in a timely and professional manner. Recognizing, evaluating, and solving problems in order to correct errors timely and efficiently is essential.

    This Position requires:

    • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment

    • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures, and to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

    • Proficiency in developing and maintaining departmental quality assurance

    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with physicians, patients, employees, and the public

    Essential Job Functions

    Triage:Greet, escort, and bring patients to the appropriate room. Keep appointments flowing smoothly to assure all patients are seen timely, and the physician's time is well-managed. Do an initial triage including but not limited to vital signs and patient history information. Follow physician protocols and obtain all requested information from the patient or appropriate family member. Take patient’s history including but not limited to chief complaint, family history, and drug allergies. Retrieves medical records. Responsible for patient education: distributes pamphlets and samples, gives care instructions verbally, provides instruction sheets, and answers patient's questions.

    Orders:Order all appropriate testing including in-house lab work and x-rays as guided by physician protocol.

    Test Results:Ensure all results and reports from either in-house testing or outside testing is in the chart prior to the physician seeing the patient or according to the physician’s request.

    Procedures:Practice only within the guidelines as permitted by your license and state regulations. May apply dressing changes and performs suture removals. Promptly responds to any physician request. Gives injections/local anesthesia. Assist physician with hospital consults (as appropriate). Observes sterilization guidelines. Prepares treatment room for next patient (includes cleaning, stocking, and instruments ready). Responds to emergency situations confidently and professionally. Assist physicians and other staff with all procedures as directed. Follow appropriate protocol to ensure the patients’ health and safety. Administer medications and appropriate care based upon physician orders. After exam/procedures checks chart and charge sheets for accuracy and completeness before directing patients to front desk.

    Laboratory:Performs appropriate diagnostic lab procedures including blood/urine specimen collection, preparation, and storage, etc. Records accurate and complete patient information on laboratory requisition forms, specimen containers, and log book. Keeps laboratory stocked, organized, and clean. Quarterly inventories surgical instruments. Assures lab equipment is maintained functional at all times. Maintains laboratory in compliance with CLIA regulations. Responsible for CLIA administrative paperwork and testing.

    Discharge:After the physician has completed the examination of the patient and following physician orders, deliver the appropriate medications, instructions, handouts, and answer any questions the patient may have regarding their care.

    Computer Systems:Allscripts Professional PM and EHR, Scanner, Email and Website, Microsoft Word and Excel, and MyChart.

    Phones:Utilize phone system properly, answer phones in a courteous manner, quickly identify caller’s needs, route calls appropriately, create complete flag and phone notes and route appropriately. Reply to all phone notes and flags in a timely manner. Respond to all patient questions and requests within physician protocol or under their specific direction.

    Communication:Communicate with all staff, patients, and referring offices using phones, EMR flags and phone notes, and secure messaging and Company email; utilizing each method when appropriate. Follow up and seek resolution to complaints per policy and reports them to a supervisor and office manager. Report all incidents as per policy.

    Marginal Job Functions

    • Assist supervisor or other administrative staff with assigned tasks

    • Proper knowledge and use of security and emergency procedures

    • Keeps up-to-date on all pertinent information affecting job and patient care.

    • Verifies low stock/supplies and orders as appropriate.

    • Timely checks and puts away stock, supplies, and laundry, etc.

    • Charts in medical records as appropriate.

    • Monitors drug samples and sales people.

    • Assures drug reps do not stock unassisted

    • Regularly organizes drug shelf & disposes of expired drug samples

    • Responsible for maintaining an updated crash cart.

    • Remains in compliance with OSHA- Blood borne Pathogen Standard guidelines including universal precautions, personal protective equipment, and housekeeping, etc.

    • Remains in compliance with OSHA/Hazardous Communication Standard guidelines and Clinic Laboratory Improvement Act Standards.

    • Trains new employees.

    • Keeps treatment rooms clean and stocked (supplies, pamphlets, etc.)

    Job Standards specific to this job

    Education:Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required. Certification is not required but requested. BLS and AED certification is required

    Experience:No experience is necessary; however it is requested to have experience in the medical field. Pay is based upon experience level
