Medical Billing Clerk is responsible for reviewing, researching, coding, and generating third party billing for a medical facility. Completes and verifies ICD-10 coding. Being a Medical Billing Clerk inputs and maintains all payment records in database or systems. Performs basic customer service for routine patient or other inquiries. Additionally, Medical Billing Clerk requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Billing Clerk works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     JOB DESCRIPTION

    Job Title: Medical Billing Clerk-Payment Poster

    Supervisor: Billing Manager

    Major Responsibilities/Tasks:

    · Ensure payments are posted and processed in a timely manner

    · Process payments to include live check, copayments and payment made at the office, and client payments

    · Review all payments to ensure accuracy

    · Process and review all payments in accordance with fee schedules where available

    · Help to ensure that all payments received on CPT codes which have modifiers, multiple frequencies appended are paid correctly

    · Work in conjunction with AR, Charge Posting, and EDI functions to process payments more efficiently

    • Assists in both day-to-day and special projects and performs other duties as assigned
    • Flags, routes, and notes all denials, zero payments, secondary insurance balances, recoupments, and/or questionable accounts for the billing clerk to research
    • Locates insurance company EOB's/remittances via various websites as necessary
    • Follows processing guidelines and established policies/procedures
    • Maintains strictest confidentiality of patient and facility related business; Adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations

    · Expected to cross train to serve as a backup for other functions of the billing team

    Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

    Experience: Medical billing or medical office experience preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    · Proficient and accurate data entry

    · Working knowledge of medical claims processing guidelines and practices

    • Understanding of deductibles, coinsurance, copays, contractual allowances, denial reasons, non-covered, patient responsibility
    • Experience reading and understanding various insurance company EOB's
    • Ability to calculate in and out of network benefits
    • Working knowledge of medical claims processing guidelines and practices
    • Ability to plan, organize and oversee workflow
    • Regular, physical attendance on a predictable basis is essential to the performance of this job
    • Knowledge of standard reference applications (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS)
    • Must be highly motivated and work well both independently and in a team environment
    • Must be trustworthy, accurate, self-reliant and organized
    • Ability to communicate effectively with insurance representatives, clinical and administrative staff, and other team members
    • Ability to evaluate processes and procedures for continuous process improvement
    • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
    • Ability to use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure to answer correspondence and reports

    Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, accounting software, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

    Work Environment: Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time. Manual dexterity for using a calculator and computer keyboard. Some bending and stooping required.

    Mental/Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a busy office environment. Frequent contact with employees and outside agencies
