Medical Billing Clerk is responsible for reviewing, researching, coding, and generating third party billing for a medical facility. Completes and verifies ICD-10 coding. Being a Medical Billing Clerk inputs and maintains all payment records in database or systems. Performs basic customer service for routine patient or other inquiries. Additionally, Medical Billing Clerk requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Billing Clerk works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. The Billing Clerk gathers charge information, enters into database, completes billing process, and distributes billing information.
Reports to: Senior Accountant
Essential Functions
Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.
Researches all information needed to complete billing process including getting charge information from physicians.
Keys charge information into on-line entry program and produces billing.
Participates with other staff to follow up on accounts until no balance or turned over for collection.
Assists with error resolution.
Posts charges and payments.
Responsible for filing paper HCFA, UB04 and electronic claims.
Reprocesses or appeals insurance rejections.
Assists with answering the telephone and provides information as requested regarding billing inquiries.
Keeps current on all billing procedures and rules.
Contacts third party payers for follow-up and resolution of accounts.
Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Completes annual educational requirements.

Minimum Education High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Work Experience Minimum: One to three years of billing experience in a healthcare organization.
