Medical Billing Clerk is responsible for reviewing, researching, coding, and generating third party billing for a medical facility. Completes and verifies ICD-10 coding. Being a Medical Billing Clerk inputs and maintains all payment records in database or systems. Performs basic customer service for routine patient or other inquiries. Additionally, Medical Billing Clerk requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Billing Clerk works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. A multifaceted role designed to support revenue integrity in laboratory tests coding and billing. Requires flexibility to move between the various aspects of the role to ensure continuity of support and compliance to regulatory coding and billing for laboratory tests.
Utilizes system generated reports to analyze, track, and reconcile monthly exception and summary reports
Tracks and monitors laboratory (advanced beneficiary notices) ABN and write-offs to determine if funds can be recouped
Identify misc. charges and correctly post and reflect changes on client statement.
Meets regularly with the denial specialist and facility leadership to discuss repetitive issue
Process billing adjustment forms received from clients and monitor receipt of same for trends or problems.
Monitoring patient flow through the department. Schedules appointments, calls referrals, checks insurance status and updates the medical record to reflect most current information. Maintains database for indigent care, reconciles charges on a daily basis.
Assists with procuring and controlling supplies, equipment and materials used in the department. Coordinates timely repair of equipment and maintenance of environment. Performs cost comparisons as needed.
Work with operations manager to acquire and then build all client accounts in computer system both on the laboratory side and the Outreach module processor.
Communicates new account builds to Lab IS, MHUMC IS contact, MHUMC billing contact, and all lab personnel. Documents accounts on account listing form.
Accounts are kept up-to-date with accurate phone, fax, and applicable registration guidelines. Contract account folder and client files are organized and current
Assists with monitoring through regular auditing and reconciliation of multiple data bases Provides reports from these data bases on a daily, weekly, biweekly or as needed basis
Provides clerical support for departmental/division specific PI projects – collects and tracks data, provide regular updates to Director, Managers, Supervisors and/or Team Members.
Other duties as assigned.
Medical terminology required. Must utilize sound critical thinking skills. Experience with Word, Excel, and data base management required. Familiar with coding and billing in medical or laboratory settings.
One Year of Relevant Experience (3-5 years preferred)
Associate’s Degree Required (Bachelor's Degree preferred)
Leadership experience preferred
