Medical Device Lab Technician works in a laboratory setting, producing medical devices such as prosthetics or orthotics, implants, or other devices. Configures and constructs devices to specifications established by a physician or other health care provider. Being a Medical Device Lab Technician utilizes tools and precision instruments to result in customized fit, optimal function, and maximum comfort for the patient. Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles defective or worn devices or appliances. Additionally, Medical Device Lab Technician works closely with the Orthotist or Prosthetist. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Device Lab Technician works under moderate supervision. Associates Degree for Technician; plus ASCP certification or equivalent within one year of employment
Bachelors Degree for Scientist; Bachelor’s degree with completion of approved Medical Laboratory Scientist program. Pass National Board of Certification exam to obtain status as registered Medical Laboratory Scientist within one year of hire; plus must also meet CLIA 88 requirements to perform high Complexity testing.
Both positions must productively interact with other medical laboratory personnel, physicians, nurses and pathologists both within the hospital and from other hospitals and laboratories.
