Medical Device Lab Technician works in a laboratory setting, producing medical devices such as prosthetics or orthotics, implants, or other devices. Configures and constructs devices to specifications established by a physician or other health care provider. Being a Medical Device Lab Technician utilizes tools and precision instruments to result in customized fit, optimal function, and maximum comfort for the patient. Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles defective or worn devices or appliances. Additionally, Medical Device Lab Technician works closely with the Orthotist or Prosthetist. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Device Lab Technician works under moderate supervision. Performs and interprets routine laboratory procedures, applying the principles, theories and techniques of medical laboratory science.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
An associate degree from a college/university and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited MLT program.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
MLS or MLT employees are required to obtain ASCP (or equivalent) certification within the first year of employment. Extensions to obtain certification may be allowed at the discretion of the Department Director if the employee is in good standing within the organization. Certification maintenance must be maintained as required by certifying agency.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Knowledge of current medical terminology and full range of laboratory tests and equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with medical staff, patients and staff. Strong problem solving abilities.
