Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Mountain Community Health Partnership is seeking a part time Medical Interpreter/Translator. The Interpreter works with non-English speaking patients and acts as a conduit between the patient and medical professionals by listening to the professional and orally translating information into the patient's language. Interpreters may translate such information as the reason for a medical visit, past medical history and family medical history, as well as explaining medical procedures, giving medical care instructions, providing drug information and scheduling follow-up appointments. Interpreters are privy to sensitive information, so they must maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, following ethical codes that protect the patient, translate written materials such as legal documents or reports, and edit written patient materials and verify for accuracy. The Interpreter must be detail-oriented and professional, possess exceptional interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, a commitment to justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion, and ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement. The Interpreter must be willing to work at any MCHP location based on clinic needs.
High School diploma or equivalent required. At least two years' experience directly related to responsibilities preferred. Certification/Licensure Interpreter/Translator Certificate and/or Certificate of Competency from an approve training program preferred.
