Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Provides interpretation and translation services for deaf, or hard of hearing patients and their families/caregivers, and employees in accordance with Corewell Health and departmental policies and procedures.

    Essential Functions

    • Ensures appropriate interpretation, transliterating and language access services for Deaf/Hard of Hearing patients and employees.

    • Provides interpreting and transliterating services in accordance with Corewell Health policies and procedures and the National Council on Interpreters In Health Care (NCIHC) Code of Ethics governing the profession of interpretation.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED

    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Successful completion of an Interpreting/Transliterating Degree Program providing interpreting services in a health care setting
    • CRT-Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Certified - NAD National Association of the Deaf
    • LIC-Driver's License - State of Michigan
    • CRT-Auto Insurance
