Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.   • This position is responsible for providing interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in a variety of settings, including classrooms, university activities, and as needed. Responsible for providing interpreting at all levels and for all aspects of university functions. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the director of Disability Services.
    Essential Job Functions
    • Provides interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in a variety of settings, including classrooms, university activities, and as needed.
    • Evaluates communication needs of deaf and hard-of hearing consumers and provides communication access based on that evaluation.
    • Assists in providing captioning as needed.
    • Follows policies and regulations regarding interpreting procedures and code of conduct.
    Non-Essential Job Functions
    Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of professional standards and regulations in the areas of sign language and interpreting.
    • Knowledge of deafness and deaf culture.
    • Knowledge of signing and a clear understanding when signed to (sign-to-voice).
    • Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.
    • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
    • Ability to communicate effectively through sign language and in both oral and written English.
    • Ability to problem-solve a variety of situations.
    • Ability to provide support to student development with a demonstrable concern for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
    • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
    Physical Demands Required Education
    High school diploma or equivalent is required.
    Required Experience and Training
    One year of related experience is required. Certification by the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, Division for the Deaf, Registry for Interpreting for the Deaf, or an equivalent certifying agency at a minimum of BEI Basic, BEI Level I, or equivalent is required prior to employment.
    Preferred Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in human services, rehabilitation, or a related field is preferred. College-level experience with interpreting is preferred.
