Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Responsibilities

    The Interpreter will provide interpretation within the State of Arizona to agencies in the State of Arizona to reach individuals with a language barrier. Interpretation will consist of but not limited to Education, legal, Medical, Environmental, and Social Services, etc. This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.

     

    Job Responsibilities

    • Accurately interpreting spoken work situations like lectures, conversations, and meetings. 
    • Utilizing technology to transcribe spoken English in some settings. 
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Job Skills and Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High school/ BA Degree/ or equivalent in years of experience / MISS, RID certification/ "Linguist title; Linguist Analyst, Language Control Manager”
    • 5 /years, Language Liaison; Education, Medical, Environmental, Military Interpretation,
    • Registry of Interpretation for Deaf (RID), Board of evaluation of Interpretation certification program (BEI), World Association of Sign Language Interpreters.
    • Must be comfortable interpreting for these organizations: National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)Department of Social services (DSHS), Certified Health Interpretation (CHI), Federal courts, Legal, economic and World Bank.
    • Must be fluent in one or more of the following languages: Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Chin Hakka, Dari, Farsi/Persian, French, German, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Nepali, Pashto, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tigrinya, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, and ASL.
    • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

    Minimum Skills:

    • The ability to facilitate communication with discretion and impartiality. 
    • Proficiency in oral and written communication 
    • A wide breadth of knowledge in a variety of topics 
    • Strong social awareness for interpretation with empathy and attentiveness 
    • The ability to track and remember information and concepts while simultaneously interpreting them. 
    • Physical stamina and dexterity for extended interpretation sessions
    • Must possess problem-solving skills.
    • Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.
    • Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks at any one time.
    • Ability to forge new relationships, individual and teaming in nature.
    • Must be a Self-starter, that can work independently and as part of a team.

     

    Reports to: Deputy Program Manager

     

    Working Conditions

    • Professional office environment.
    • On-call as needed
    • Translator will be notified within 24 to 48 hours of potential jobs that come in and language is needed.
    • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties while standing for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
    • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
    • Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
    • May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
    • May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
    • May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
