Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Job Summary: Under the direction of Director of Patient Experience, the incumbent serves as a Medical Interpreter for patients, providers and staff and supports the operation of the department. Relays medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with all CNE system and hospital policies and procedures, supporting patient confidentiality, patient dignity and informed consent. Explains hospital resources, clinical procedures, office or clinic protocols, and facilitates verbal communication between clinicians and patients. Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource. Performs duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.
Specifications: High School Degree or equivalent with an approved certification in medical translation required. Must demonstrate proficiency as a medical interpreter in a healthcare setting. Experience demonstrating high level of interpersonal skills, both oral and written, analytical skills, organizational skills and effectiveness within a team environment. Must possess strong cultural awareness competencies, linguistic and interpreting skills and ethical competency. Experience working in a fast-paced environment preferred. Must be able to travel between locations without limitations.
