Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Detailed Job Description
    Please note: This position is 40 hours per week/44 weeks per year on campus. 40 weeks (nine months) are scheduled mid-August to mid-May for the fall and spring semesters. Four weeks (one month) are scheduled during the summer between mid-May and mid-August. A weekly schedule is established each semester, which will require flexibility to support student schedules, including the ability to work weekdays Monday through Friday within the hours of 8am to 10pm and occasionally on the weekends. The position's start date is August 14,2023. The interpreter's work will be onsite at RIT's Henrietta campus.

    This position is critical in providing interpreting services for signed and spoken discourse in classrooms, meetings, interviews, and other on campus events.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Provide interpreting services to RIT students, faculty, and staff.
    • Engage in preparation and effective customer relations
    • Interpret signed and spoken discourse in classroom and non-academic assignments, with clients who use a wide variety of language modalities. (An interpreting/transliterating skills assessment is part of the interview process.)
    • Assess language needs of all clientele and adjust interpreting to ensure accurate and effective communication
    • Meet with clientele, preview available materials, and research additional resources to prepare for assignments; confirm all assignments with consumers
    • Attend department meetings, engage in, devise, develop and implement a professional development plan with input and guidance from your team manager
    • Maintain accurate time cards via RIT's time reporting system
    • Communicate in a professional manner in all settings

    Department/College Description
    The Department of Access Services (DAS) at RIT/NTID seeks candidates to join the largest staff of interpreters working in postsecondary education. RIT/NTID is a dynamic, language-rich environment of 1,200 deaf students, staff, and faculty on a campus of nearly 17,000 students. DAS boasts a phenomenal professional development program that offers over 400 hours of PD annually. The interpreting component of Access Services is organized into six interpreting teams. Interpreters work primarily in the specialized content areas of their teams, which correspond with the eleven colleges of RIT.

    DAS hires interpreters whose skills range from entry level to senior level. A candidates experience, language proficiency, and interpreting skill are considered before hiring into the Apprentice, Associate, or Interpreter rank.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Requirements include but are not limited to:
    • An Associates, Bachelors or Masters level degree OR 3 years of Professional Interpreting Experience
    • Proficiency in American Sign Language and English
    • Wage band dependent on skill level hired into.
      • Range from 117H - 119H
