Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs bi-lingual (Spanish/English) verbal and written interpreting in a healthcare setting, using comprehensive or specialized skills with the knowledge and practice of interpreter ethics. Interprets accurately and completely for patients and providers via the telephone and in person, using accurate bi-lingual medical terminology. Documents the provision of all services accurately and in a timely manner. Prepares simple written translation of patient/family education documents from English into Spanish. Acts as a quest relations liaison between Spanish-speaking patients and the patient care staff.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalency required.
Require certification of successful completion at least 40 hours of medical interpreter training from a nationally recognized organization (i.e. Bridging the Gap)
OR require Associates Degree in Medical Interpreting.
Must have proof of passing nationally recognized Medical Interpreter Skills Assessment exam within 30 days of hire.
Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database software preferred
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Prefer Medical/Health Interpreter Certification or engaged in the process to become certified in a local, regional or national setting by a well-established and recognized organization.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
At least 2 years of experience interpreting for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Spanish-speaking patients in a healthcare setting. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English and Spanish using accurate bilingual medical terminology. Knowledge of interpreter ethics. Knowledge of local Hispanic community and culture. Ability to work independently. Ability to coordinate and manage multiple activities. Ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient working relationships with patients and their families, co-workers, all patient care providers and physicians.
