Medical Laboratory Technician performs a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic medical lab tests as requested by healthcare staff according to established protocols and procedures. Prepares specimens for microscopic examination or testing procedures. Being a Medical Laboratory Technician operates automated laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Performs quality control and assurance procedures. Additionally, Medical Laboratory Technician records lab results in specified system. Follows all required privacy, safety, and biohazard procedures and standards. Requires an associate degree in laboratory technology, science or equivalent. Requires valid certification as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP or AMT. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Laboratory Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. Position Summary:
Performs laboratory analysis and quality control testing following clearly defined criteria
Reports any unusual conditions to the Senior Tech, Corrdinator over that area, in the absence of the Director or the Pathologist.Performs common testing procedures and reports test results.Performs instrument maintenance and calibration and troubleshooting..Performs quality control testing.Maintains supplies needed for performance of tests.Performs collections, clerical duties and administration.Responsible for order and result entry into laboratory information systems.Delivers direct patient care appropriate to the age of the patient served
Reports to: Director of LaboratoryQualificationsMinimum EducationAssociate degree from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician; or equivalent in accordance with the CLIA requirements Required
Medical Lab Technician Trainee License is acceptable provided graduation from an accredited Medical Lab Technician Program has been completed and will test within 90 days of hire.Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.Licenses:
Registry from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent registry and West Virginia State Laboratory Technician licensure.EEOC Statement:
