Medical Laboratory Technician jobs in Topeka, KS

Medical Laboratory Technician performs a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic medical lab tests as requested by healthcare staff according to established protocols and procedures. Prepares specimens for microscopic examination or testing procedures. Being a Medical Laboratory Technician operates automated laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Performs quality control and assurance procedures. Additionally, Medical Laboratory Technician records lab results in specified system. Follows all required privacy, safety, and biohazard procedures and standards. Requires an associate degree in laboratory technology, science or equivalent. Requires valid certification as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP or AMT. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Laboratory Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     Responsibilities

    • Promote professionalism and interact with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
    • Display technical expertise necessary to ensure timely and accurate results of laboratory procedures.
    • Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
    • Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
    • Support organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
    • Attain required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
    • Exhibit problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results.
    • Participate in the training/mentoring of new employees, students or interns including lectures and bench techniques.
    • Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
    • Demonstrate proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.  
    • Responsible for other duties as assigned.
    • Engage in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.         
    • Promote consensus building and applies techniques of conflict resolution and conduct improvement.  
    • Retain accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
    • Promote service excellence and growth of the laboratory.

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements

    • Baccalaureate Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a chemical, physical or biological science OR Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician studies, or a chemical, physical or biological science associates degree.

    Preferred Job Requirements

    • ASCP or equivalent. Certification within a specific area, i.e. M(ASCP), H(ASCP), C(ASCP) qualifies.   
    • Previous clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist within a clinical laboratory
