Prepares specimens for microscopic examination or testing procedures. Being a Medical Laboratory Technician operates automated laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Performs quality control and assurance procedures. Additionally, Medical Laboratory Technician records lab results in specified system. Follows all required privacy, safety, and biohazard procedures and standards. Requires an associate degree in laboratory technology, science or equivalent. Requires valid certification as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from ASCP or AMT. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of a supervisor, the medical laboratory technician provides technical assistance in the performance of routine tests.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Prepares reagents and solutions.
2. Examine and analyze bodily fluids and cells.
3. Reports abnormalities and maintains a detailed record of daily activities.
4. Performs phlebotomy procedures when necessary.
5. Type and cross-match blood samples.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects.
2. Ability to lift and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds in weight.
3. Attends mandatory meetings.
4. Adheres to the dress code, attendance, and all other company policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
1. Associate of Science degree in medical technology or life sciences or accredited MLT program.
2. ASCP or AMT certification preferred.
3. Two (2) years of experience in a hospital setting preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. May be exposed to the risk of communicable diseases and radiation.
2. May require handling of unclean or infectious materials.
3. Normally works in a well-lighted, well-ventilated area.
4. Must be able to work under the stress and conditions that normally exist in a hospital setting.
5. Classification Category 1 – Tasks involving blood, bodily fluids, or tissues exposure.
