Medical Librarian (MLS) provides guidance and assistance to users researching medical information using database searches, inter-library loans, and other resources. Ensures the cataloging and circulation of materials are performed efficiently and correctly according to policies and standards. Being a Medical Librarian (MLS) creates training materials and delivers library instruction and education programs for physicians and other staff. Leads or contributes ideas for library strategic planning, quality initiatives, and the development of digital media and educational resources. Additionally, Medical Librarian (MLS) maintains current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. Position Overview :
Performs various chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Applies techniques used in the field of blood banking, hematology, serology, chemistry and morphological examinations. Records test results, quality control, remedial action and may also engage in research.
Essential Functions :
b) Responsible for careful handling of chemicals and infectious material to protect all laboratory personnel : collection of blood and other specimens under aseptic conditions.
c) Responsible for care of expensive scientific laboratory and judicious use of materials.
d) Responsible for supervising a department, section of testing or shift as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
Qualifications & Skills :
a) Education : The employee must fulfill one of the following education requirements as required by CLIA regulations.
1. Master's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological science; OR
2. Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological science.
Applicants without current certification take and pass the ASCP, NCA ( MT / MLS ) or equivalent exam within 6 months of hire.
In the event that the employee does not pass registry exam the employee will be placed on probation and must retake and pass exam within three months as a condition of employment.
In the event that the registration exam is not passed on the second attempt, the employee will not be eligible to be employed as a Medical Technologist until receiving a passing score on the registry exam.
b) Training and experience : Must have at least 3 months of training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
Training may include previous employment, on-site or as part of an education curriculum.
c) Job Knowledge : Complete operational ability in all lab areas.
