  • Position Purpose

    As the lead clinician at the Academy, the medical director works closely with Academy leadership, faculty, and other administrators to provide high-quality healthcare services and support to Phillips Exeter Academy students, including medical, nutritional, orthopedic, and psychiatric aspects of wellness. The medical director directly oversees the clinical and administrative operations of the Lamont Health and Wellness Center (LHWC), which is available 24/7 when students are on campus and includes externally contracted services, such as physical therapy and psychiatric care. The medical director is housed on campus, embedded in the campus residential community.

    Key Accountabilities

    Clinical

    • Provide for and oversee medical services to Academy students whenever students are on campus, coordinating backup coverage as appropriate. This includes the school year and the five-week summer program. Medical responsibilities include outpatient care and inpatient admission and care at the health center.
    • Supervise the clinical services of health center staff to provide high-quality care to students, by nursing staff, athletic trainers (AT), and advanced practice providers (APPs).
    • Supervise and review APP and AT documentation and clinical practice.
    • Oversee the coordination of care for students admitted to hospitals or referred to other health care providers off campus.
    • Work in close partnership with the director of counseling and psychological services and dean of student health and wellness to ensure wrap-around care of all students.
    • Provide approximately twelve hours /week of direct patient care, adjusted as needed to accommodate for periods of high volume or coverage needs.
    • Share on-call rotation with advanced practice providers and provide back-up coverage for advanced practice providers who are on-call.
    • Provide consultation to counseling, nutritional, and athletic training staff as needed.
    • Develop protocols and provide guidance in anticipation of and during medical emergencies affecting the health of the community, such as communicable disease emergencies.
    • Serve as the primary clinical representative of the health center to Academy parents/guardians.
    • Oversee and ensure appropriate documentation in students’ medical records through the electronic health records system, including the annual incorporation of new students.
    • Lead quality assurance efforts required to ensure state-of-the-art health care.
    • Maintain professional competency through participation in relevant continuing medical education programs. Maintain current licensure and board certification and comply with all state and federal regulations necessary for the practice of medicine.
    • Participate in student medical leave and medical leave return decisions and planning.
    • Implement plans and care coordination with families and outside providers for chronic medical concerns.

    Administrative

    • Develop and implement short- and long-range visions and plans for the health and wellness of students, aligned with the mission and values of the Academy. Ensure the continued provision of appropriate and high-quality services to students, particularly relating to physical facilities, staffing needs, scope of care, and program development.
    • Develop, assess, and revise clinical protocols, policies, and procedures in collaboration with health center staff, deans, administrators, and other on-campus partners.
    • Mentor and manage direct reports. In collaboration with department supervisors, oversee LHWC personnel, including recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and conflict resolution.
    • Promote the image of the health center to the community through enhanced communication about the nature of services provided and the overall philosophy guiding care.
    • Collaborate with faculty to support preventative health initiatives across campus.
    • Serve as clinical liaison between Health Center staff and the faculty and administration, ensuring the communication of up-to-date medical practices and information to appropriate parties.
    • Oversee the development of the annual operating and capital budgets.
    • Maintain professional relationships with local healthcare organizations and specialists to ensure access to necessary referral and consultative services.
    • Oversee the provision of all contracted services for Health Services, working closely with the director of counseling and psychological services (CAPS), director of athletic training, finance, and general counsel to manage and arrange contracts.
    • Participate in relevant internal and external committee assignments and meetings.
    • Oversee the compliance of the Lamont Health and Wellness Facility with Academy policies and procedures as well as relevant legal and licensing requirements.
    • Serve on the Academy’s incident response team as needed to provide expertise and support for emergent situations impacting the campus.

    Direct/Indirect Reports

    Direct

    The medical director oversees the director of athletic training, director of nursing, advanced practice providers, dietician, office manager and any agency or contract medical or psychiatric providers.

    Indirect

    All health center staff, including administrative staff, clinical coordinator, nurses, assistants, athletic trainers, chaperones and other contracted staff. 

    Internal & External Contacts

    Frequent contact with students, Dean of Students office, PEA administrative and academic offices, faculty, coaches, and staff.  External contacts may include parents, outside organizations, visitors and local community neighbors.

    Position Requirements

    Education

    • MD or DO required.
    • Must be licensed to practice medicine in NH and maintain a valid DEA license.
    • Must have completed approved residency program, and achieved board certification in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, or Pediatrics-Internal Medicine.

    Experience

    • Minimum 3 - 5 years’ primary care experience required.
    • Adolescent medicine fellowship training and experience preferred.
    • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting is preferred.
    • Experience in leadership or director roles preferred.

    • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor, and exercise restraint at all times, including in stressful situations.

    Additional Requirements

    1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
    2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
    3. Successfully complete a State of NH Background (upon hire)
    4. Pre-hire physical clearance and immunization record review.
    5. This position is considered “Essential Personnel” in the event that: an emergency occurs on the PEA Campus or in the vicinity that would impact PEA; inclement weather forces the closing of campus; or other emergency events deemed appropriate. Essential Personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed to do so if contacted directly by the supervisor (or his/her designee), the Principal, or a member of the Principal’s Staff (Leadership Team).
