  • Duties

    • Assigns specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
    • Uses specialized procedures and methods to correct and amend records.
    • Analyzes and interprets documentation in records, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data
    • Codes complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures.
    • Gathers and compiles various data and produces reports.

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
    • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
    • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Basic Requirement for a Medical Records Technician (Coder):

    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes ensuring medical records are accurate and contain appropriate documentation and translating diagnostic and procedural phrases from the medical record into coded form using ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books or similar. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    Highly Preferred: Experience with Military Health System (MHS) Genesis: The Electronic Health Record
