Medical Records Coding Manager supervises and trains a team of medical coders to ensure medical records are coded with accuracy and completeness. Ensures medical records coding operations follow the latest guidelines and compliance standards. Being a Medical Records Coding Manager maintains required documentation and confidentiality of patient records. Implements processes for coding operations that support the needs of other healthcare partners. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Manager develops and maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest ICD and CPT coding versions and ensures coders receive updates and training on classification or guideline changes. Is a certified medical coder and the exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, a related field, or equivalent. Depending on the setting typically requires the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification. May additionally have the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Medical Records Coding Manager supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions.     SUMMARY:
    We are currently seeking a Coding Educator to join our Hospital Billing OP Coding team. This full-time role will primarily work hybrid (SHIFT: Day).

    Purpose of this position: Responsible for providing ongoing coding education to coding employees who are providing coding and billing services. Responsible for resolving problems and providing education related to the coding and billing responsibilities of a work unit.

    Current List of non-MN States where Hennepin Healthcare is an Eligible Employer: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Tracks quality metrics, monitors programs, and implements coding education initiatives for all coders and providers to support the health system's mission
    • Performs coding quality audits of records for ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and E/M assignment
    • Documents and reviews all recommended coding changes with appropriate management and staff
    • Identifies trends and patterns in coding and documentation variances and provide education
    • Develops and presents education materials to coders and providers
    • Assists Clinical Documentation Improvement program by working closely with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists and coders
    • Assesses coding and patient care documentation practices to ensure compliance with pertinent regulations and guidelines
    • Researches, summarizes, and disseminates information regarding coding requirements and updates to the appropriate system management and staff
    • Serves as a resource for department managers, physicians, and administration to obtain information and clarification on accurate and ethical coding standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements
    • Maintains licensure/certification and skills by obtaining required professional continuing education
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Associate's degree in business and/or healthcare administration, Health Information Management, or Health Information Technology
    • Minimum of (5) years coding experience in applicable area (professional coding or hospital coding)

    -OR-

    • An approved equivalent combination of education and experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P)

    -OR-

    • Other approved AHIMA or AAPC credential

    Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:

    • Experience with Epic electronic medical record functionality and encoder and reimbursement systems recommended
    • Must have extensive and demonstrated expertise in CPT, HCPCS, E/M code assignment and ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems
    • Knowledge of state and federal legislation for HIPAA Privacy, medical record access, and regulatory and accreditation agencies
    • Knowledge of current medical record technology, statistics, data presentation, and reporting
    • Organizes, delegates, and monitors work assignments
    • Communicates effectively in oral or written communications; initiates, leads, mentors, and coaches staff
