Medical Records Coding Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Coding Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Requires a medical coding certification. The exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. May require an associate degree. The AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is typically required. The Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is also a typical requirement. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Coding Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.      POSITION SUMMARY

    The Billing & Coding Educational Liaison is responsible for the education and training of providers, residents and new students rotating through the organization including but not limited to the Nurse Practitioner Students, Physician Assistant Students and Pharmacy Students. The Billing & Coding Educational Liaison works closely with the management team at each location, the Office of Clerkship and the Billing Manager to train all students and complete charts audits on residents in clinics for block. This position is responsible for enhancing billing and coding education to residents, fellows, providers and other necessary staff.  This position is a key role in supporting the organization’s compliance with federal, state and other guidelines including those related to the designation of a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and ensuring residents, fellows, students and providers are educated and well informed of coding requirements and relevant changes on a timely basis.

    This position reports to Billing and Coding Manager. No staff report to this position.


     

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES and FUNCTIONS

    While living and demonstrating our Core Values, the Billing & Coding Educational Liaison will:

    • Create training protocol of the clinical workflow, documentation and Medent usage.
    • Work with the students during their orientation for the clinical rotation for NP and PA students and Pharmacy Students
    • Assist AVP Revenue Integrity and the Billing and Coding Manager with documentation, billing, coding, educating faculty, residents and staff
    • Create an audit process to review the quality of the documentation and work of the new providers in conjunction with the billing department
      •  Internal Audit Committee for CPT and documentation compliance
    • Conduct ongoing quality audits to review documentation and delivery of the care plans/goals 
    • Create an audit process and a document to be used on the chart audits
    • Participate collaboratively with Revenue Cycle to introduce coding and documentation during annual orientation of new residents
    • Ensure ongoing compliance for all new residents, fellows and providers on coding selection, and documentation to minimize any payer and governmental audit risk
    • Educate all residents, fellows and providers based on approved education schedule as well as feedback from Revenue Cycle resulting from claims processing
    • Develop a rotation schedule and ensuring a physical presence throughout clinical venues to field on-site questions and aid with coding and documentation
    • Attend meetings such as weekly operations meetings, staff meetings, and others as required
    • Educate and train medical scribes on coding and documentation compliance
    • Perform monthly chart audits of completed progress notes and orders and provide feedback to residents, fellows, and providers.  Communicate results including necessary information to Revenue Cycle to appropriately reprocess claims for compliance and financial reporting
    • Assist other members of the team with projects as needed
    • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations
    • Other duties as assigned by management

    Requirements

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's Degree in any Healthcare related degree or equivalent experience
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Attention to detail and patient centered focus
    • Experience with Microsoft Office and database management.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Good planning and problem-solving skills

    PACE CARD METRICS

    • Create an audit process and a document to review each chart
    • Complete 5 charts audits per resident in clinic block per month at all locations
    • Complete and update the PowerPoint for orientation of the new students of the clinical workflow and processes
    • Create training and Conduct trainings for providers, staff and residents on a bi yearly basis
    •  Reviewing and Correcting Provider's PACECARD CPT Compliance scores
