Medical Records Coding Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Coding Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Requires a medical coding certification. The exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. May require an associate degree. The AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is typically required. The Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is also a typical requirement. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Coding Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. South Bend Orthopaedics is currently searching for a full-time Medical Records Associate.

South Bend Orthopaedics, with additional locations in Mishawaka, Plymouth, La Porte and Elkhart, Indiana has provided the orthopaedic surgeons for their athletic department since 1949.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Receives calls from patients, Physician offices and Attorneys for patient records.
2. Copies records upon request and responds to requests for protected health information as allowable by law.
3. Fills out necessary paperwork for FMLA and Disability.
4. Scans needed material into patient records.
5. Answers phones in pleasant manner, deals with patient (customer) needs expeditiously.
6. Purges obsolete files from storage for destruction per department guidelines.
7. Sorts and prepares internal mail for distribution. Prepares outgoing mail.
Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS and ABILITIES
1. Ability to communicate clearly, and possess excellent phone skills in order to establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, Physicians, Attorneys and staff.
2. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively. Ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
3. Navigate and comprehension of computer software systems in office setting, prefer 35wpm typing skills.
4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum of two-year office experience, preferably one year of medical records experience.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Primarily office setting. Minimal exposure to communicable diseases.
Must be able to view computer screens for long periods. Occasional stress related to workload and customer/patient problems. Frequent bending, twisting and stooping. Ability to lift 10-25 pounds
