Medical Records Coding Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Coding Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Requires a medical coding certification. The exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. May require an associate degree. The AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is typically required. The Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is also a typical requirement. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Coding Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.     WHAT YOU’LL DO

    Job Summary:

    • Responsible for imported, scanned, or faxed information recognized as being part of the electronic medical record (EMR).
    • Utilizes systems operating software to coordinate and promote efficient medical information to caregivers for medical decision making, efficient information flow to HIM in response to medical requests, and legal TMH business operations dependent upon the release of complete medical records upon request.
    • Works independently, applying policy and procedures knowledge when determining patient identity, legal medical record documentation, and appropriateness in the EMR.
    • Serves as back up for birth registration functions and is often assigned duties to cover mandatory daily tasks pertaining to health information and EMR maintenance.
    • Performs duties in a timely manner to prevent delayed services due to inadequate medical history or negative financial effects due to the lack of information supporting services rendered.

    WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO APPLY

    Required Education:

    • High School Diploma (or equivalent)

     

    Preferred Education:

    • Associate degree and certification in a HIM classification

     

    Required Experience:

    • Two (2) years of experience in a HIM department (or similar industry) utilizing customer/patient indices, systems operating software, and Microsoft (MS) Office 

     Preferred Experience:

    • Three (3) or more years of experience in a HIM department (or similar industry) utilizing customer/patient indices, systems operating software, and MS Office.
    • Expertise in MS Office.

    Required Certification/License/Registry:

    • None
