Medical Records Coding Technician jobs in Trenton, NJ

Medical Records Coding Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Coding Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Coding Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Requires a medical coding certification. The exact type of coding certification may vary based on the clinical setting or a medical specialty focus. May require an associate degree. The AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is typically required. The Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is also a typical requirement. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Coding Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.   • General Description: The Billing Coordinator reports directly to the Billing Manager and is responsible for entering charges, posting and managing patient accounts. Responsible for submitting claims both electronically and on paper in addition to A/R following up with insurance companies. Must be proficient in ICD-10-CM and Procedural Coding

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Obtain all in-patient demographics and consult reports by facility
    • Review in-patient consults for coding accuracy, enter charges and submit
    • Review operative reports for coding accuracy of physician selected CPT codes
    • Process patient payments and transactions by keying data and verifying accuracy of input to reports generated
    • Research and respond to patient inquiries and complaints regarding billing issues and problems by telephone or in writing
    • Maintain a record of patient inquiries and resolutions in the appropriate patient chart
    • Establish and document payment arrangement agreements for patients
    • Prepare and submit clean claims to 3rd party carriers via electronically or paper with appropriate documentation
    • Verify electronic claims have been accepted by both the clearinghouse and insurance carrier
    • Research and correct any claims that were not accepted and resubmit
    • Follow up on submitted claims, monitor unpaid claims; resubmit as necessary
    • Prepare and submit secondary claims
    • Receive and process insurance and third party payments; balance daily batches and reports
    • File appeals on behalf of PBS patients to insurance carriers
    • Ensures strict confidentiality of financial records in accordance with HIPAA guidelines/regulations
    • Participates in educational training to maintain certified educational units
    • Verify insurance eligibility

    Education:

    • Certification as a Professional Coder preferred but not required through an accredited organization preferred (AHIMA, AAPC)

    Skills/Experience:

    • Proven work experience as a Medical Biller or similar role
    • Knowledge of medical billing/coding required including ICD-10CM and CPT
    • Knowledge of computer programs
    • Knowledge of medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices
    • Skills in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner
    • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public
