Medical Records Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Does not require a medical coding certification. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     • Provide direct supervision for civilian and military employees in the Records Management Division.
    • Manage workflow to avoid backlogs and record processing meet guidelines.
    • Perform analysis and status reviews of the Outpatient Record Section.
    • Determine that record content meets military and other regulatory criteria.
    • Provide advice to Command management on medical record requirements.

    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes supervising a team in a medical office; ensure compliance with medical records procedures, methods, and requirements to perform medical records assignments; review medical records for accuracy and completeness; and adhere to procedures, rules, operations workflow to process medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
