Job Summary
Interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals in a professional, accurate, and timely manner. Recognizes, interprets, and evaluates inconsistencies , discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medication dictation and appropriately edits, revises, and clarifies them without altering the meaning of the dictation or changing the dictator's style. Utilizes a digital dictation system, transcription system, and related software. Applies professional knowledge and uses critical thinking skills to transcribe dictation and/or edits speech recognized text. Uses medical transcription skills to distinguish dialects, medical terms, operative and pharmaceutical terms. Requires extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, surgery, diagnostic tests, pharmacology and the various medical specialties in all healthcare settings. Requires knowledge of the purpose and content of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); protects private information. Uses reference materials appropriately. Must meet defined production and quality expectations of the position.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Medical Secretary/ Medical Transcription or equivalent in work experience required.
Two years' medical transcription experience preferred.
Registered or Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist preferred.
