Job Summary:

The Scribe in the Practice Setting at Oneida Health collaborates with the medical team to provide safe, efficient, and exceptional patient care. This role involves accurately documenting medical visits and procedures performed by the medical provider. The Scribe enters detailed descriptions of patient encounters into the electronic medical record (EMR) system, retrieves lab and imaging reports, assists in creating care plans, educates patients, and ensures the smooth workflow of the practice.

Key Responsibilities:

• Enter accurate and detailed descriptions of patient encounters in the provider’s words into the EMR system.
• Document patient history, symptoms, exam findings, and treatment plans as directed by the provider.
• Navigate the EMR system to locate lab, test, and imaging reports during patient visits.
• Bring any alerts or advisories in the EMR to the provider's attention.
• Assist provider in creating care plans, patient education materials, and treatment plans.
• Prepare charts for the next day’s visits and ensure all necessary information is available in the EMR.
• Assist provider in locating codes in the system (scribe may not enter codes).
• Track and retrieve all ordered test and consultative reports, flagging missing reports to the lead RN or provider.
• Schedule management tasks as directed and assist with patient portal use and appointment confirmations.
• Perform routine equipment checks, clean and stock exam rooms, and tidy the waiting room as directed.
• Process fiberoptic scopes according to protocol and policy.
• Handle instruments according to protocol and policy.
• Communicate effectively with other team members to ensure a smooth workflow and coordinate patient care activities.
• Attend and actively participate in daily huddles and staff meetings.
• Assist during emergencies such as anaphylactic reactions or Code Blue events as directed by the RN, PA, or MD, ensuring proper documentation.
• Perform other duties as directed by the Lead RN.

Qualifications

Education:

• High School Diploma (Required).
• Medical Office Assistant education (Preferred).
• Working knowledge of medical terminology.
• Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) software.
• Accurate keyboarding skills.

Experience:

• Medical office experience (Preferred).
• Experience with electronic medical records (Preferred).

Required Skills and Abilities:

• Proficient in accurately documenting patient encounters in the EMR system.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
• Ability to navigate electronic medical record software efficiently.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
• Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED certification.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, and reach.
• Manual dexterity for keyboarding and handling instruments.
• Moderate lifting: 15-44 pounds.
