    Job Summary: Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory.

    Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

    Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, coagulation, urinalysis, venipuncture, reference and point-of-care testing.

    Ability to inventory and order supplies for blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, coagulation, urinalysis, venipuncture, reference and point-of-care testing.

    Each Medical Technologist will be assigned by the Laboratory Manager one or more areas of the clinical laboratory to function as the lead for that area. Each Medical Technologist will perform testing, inventory, quality improvement and quality assurance under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.

    Responsible for performing high-complexity testing as well as moderate complexity and waived testing. High-complexity testing consists of: all blood bank testing, all microbiology testing, manual differentials and manual cell counts.

    Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

    Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.

    Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab values for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

    Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.

    Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.

    Meets current documentation standards and policies.

    Interacts professionally with the Laboratory Manager, Pathologist and clinical laboratory staff.

    Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.

    Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

    Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.

    Follows standard precautions at all times.

    Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.

    Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.

    Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, accrediting organization, state and other regulatory requirements.

    Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

    Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.

    Demonstrates proficiency in billing and coding.

    Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean

    Completes annual educational requirements.

    Maintains regulatory requirements.

    Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

    Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.

    Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.

    Completes inservices and returns in a timely fashion.

    Attends annual review and departmental inservices, as scheduled.

    Attends 12 staff meetings annually; or reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.

    Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

    Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

    Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

    Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

    Regulatory Requirements:

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.
    • Or Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician and 2 years of experience in the Clinical Laboratory.
    • Certification preferred.
    • Language Skills:
    • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
    • Additionally languages preferred.
    • Skills:
    • Basic computer knowledge.
    • Operates the following equipment correctly and safely: photometer, spectrograph, colorimeter, microscope.
    • Physical Demands:
    • Normal hospital environment. Close eye work. Hearing within normal range. Exposure to biological, chemical and mechanical hazards. Operates various lab analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, refrigerators and freezers, alarm systems, incubators, rotators, water baths, safety hoods, incinerators, PC’s, printers and telephones. Frequent standing and walking. Occasional sitting and bending. Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds.
    • This position is a safety sensitive position pursuant to Amendment 98 to the Arkansas Constitution § 2(25). A safety sensitive position means any position in which a person performing the position while under the influence of marijuana may constitute a threat to health or safety. This position is therefore “safety sensitive” due to the fact it requires the following: performing life-threatening procedures; working with hazardous or flammable materials, controlled substances, food, or medicine; and a lapse of attention while working in this position could result in injury, illness, or death.
