Medical Technologist - Hematology performs a variety of blood tests, studies morphology of blood constituents and performs various coagulation tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Conducts technical procedures related to the counting and identification of blood cells and other specialized hematologic tests. Being a Medical Technologist - Hematology verifies accuracy of findings, identifies test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems. Operates, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used in blood analysis and procedures. Additionally, Medical Technologist - Hematology may perform urinalysis studies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or supervisor. Typically requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent. Position Summary:
The Medical Technologist is responsible for working in all sections of the Laboratory (Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, and Urinalysis) as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Follows established policies and procedures as they relate to the Laboratory.
• Receives, collects and labels specimens as appropriate while maintaining specimen integrity.
• Performs test procedures following written procedures conforming to current standards and manufacturers recommendations.
• Reviews and verifies patient results prior to reporting and communicates critical values and other grossly abnormal results to the appropriate healthcare personnel in a timely manner.
• Performs required calibration, maintenance, and quality control of instruments and procedures.
• Performs supply inventory as assigned to prevent shortages in assigned work areas.
• Notifies supervisor promptly of customer concerns, unsafe conditions, and malfunctioning instruments or test procedures.
• Maintains competence in computer skills pertaining to order entry, and laboratory computer system orders, collections, result entry, patient report retrieval, and report printing tasks.
• Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment as needed.
• Maintains current knowledge and training on equipment and procedures.
• Consistently displays a positive attitude and a personal commitment to excellence.
• Maintains basic knowledge of medical coding and keeps abreast of annual changes and updates.
• Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
• Attends all department meetings and clinic required meetings.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no direct reports.
Required Education and Experience:
• Fulfill educational requirements consistent with classification as testing personnel in a high complexity Laboratory as defined under the CLIA '88 regulations.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Technologist program, a Bachelor of Science Degree, and current certification as MT (ASCP).
• No experience necessary for individuals who have complete an accredited 4 year program in Medical Technology.
• Maintenance of certification is required through a professional Medical Technology organization (AMT, ASCP).
• Current Florida license as a Clinical Technologist in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Serology
• Current American Heart Association recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This position on occasion will require you to lift objects up to 15lbs. Strong verbal and written communication skills required. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ability to exercise good judgment and positively influence and lead others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency. Repetitive motion of upper body required for extended use of machines and computers.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position in an outpatient medical office setting. Days and hours can vary between all days of the week between the hours of 7am to 7pm. Based on business need, the ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, is required.
Travel: This position may require travel to Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Niceville and Navarre clinics.
Work Environment: This position requires regular and reliable on-site attendance.
