A Clinical Laboratory Technologist shall perform tests which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with a minimal supervision by the director or supervisor, in only those specialties or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience. Job responsibilities in the areas of Hematology: Makes acceptable slides and assures proper staining, leaves slides for review per lab policy, performs manual and automated cell counts. Chemistry: Performs special urine/serum tests, serology testing, specimen processing and calls critical values to appropriate locations. Blood Banking: Performs blood typing, antibody screens, compatibility testing and processing and issuing of blood. Bacteriology: Performs culture setup, gram stains, rapid kit testing and initial identification of positive blood cultures. Properly collects, prepares and packages specimens for reference lab. Keeps accurate records of tests according to departmental procedures and time frames. Maintains all instruments, equipment and work areas in the department.
Qualifications: A Medical Technologist must be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist by the NYS Department of Education; with the ability to work as a generalist in the following areas: chemistry, hematology blood banking, urinalysis, serology, phlebotomy and limited microbiology.
